African Union to Convene the Chairperson’s seventeenth Excessive-Degree Retreat On the Promotion of Peace, Safety and Stability in Africa in Libreville, Gabon


The African Union Fee will convene the Chairperson’s seventeenth Excessive-Degree Retreat on the Promotion of Peace, Safety and Stability in Africa from 21 to 22 Could 2026 in Libreville, Republic of Gabon.

Held below the theme “Powering Ceasefires, Nationwide Dialogue and Reconciliation for Sturdy Peace,” the Retreat will convey collectively AU Excessive Representatives, Particular Envoys, Particular and Everlasting Representatives, members of the Panel of the Clever, United Nations Particular Representatives of the Secretary-Common and Particular Envoys, Representatives of the Regional Financial Communities/Mechanisms (RECs/RMs), consultants and different related stakeholders to trade experiences and strengthen collective responses to battle prevention, administration and determination in Africa.

The Retreat might be held below the auspices of H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Fee. It should present a platform for reflection on the hyperlinks between ceasefire preparations, nationwide dialogue, reconciliation and the long-term political foundations required for sturdy peace.

The Retreat might be preceded by the Statutory Assembly of the AU Panel of the Clever on 19 Could 2026; the closed-door assembly of the Chairperson of the Fee with AU Particular and Everlasting Representatives, and the 4th Joint Retreat of AU Particular/Everlasting Representatives of the Chairperson of the Fee and United Nations Particular Representatives and Particular Envoys on 20 Could 2026.

The joint AU-UN session will give attention to enhancing strategic cooperation between the 2 organizations by built-in evaluation, coordination and joined-up motion, in step with the Joint AU-UN Framework for Enhanced Partnership in Peace and Safety.

The 2-day programme will embody high-level plenary classes, highlight conversations and management exchanges. Discussions will give attention to the implementation of ceasefire agreements; the position of girls and youth in peace processes by FemWise-Africa and the WiseYouth Community; and management reflections by former Heads of State on governance, mediation and African-led peace efforts.

The Retreat is anticipated to undertake key messages and actionable suggestions geared toward strengthening the AU’s mediation, preventive diplomacy and battle administration structure.

The Retreat is anticipated to be attended by senior officers of the Authorities of Gabon; former Heads of State and Authorities; members of the Panel of the Clever and its subsidiary mechanisms; members of the Peace and Safety Council; AU Particular Representatives, Excessive Representatives, Everlasting Representatives and Particular Envoys; United Nations Particular Representatives and Private Envoys; representatives of AU Member States; Regional Financial Communities and Regional Mechanisms; suppose tanks; companions; and officers of the African Union Fee.
