Turkey says it has mediated talks between Somalia and Ethiopia to ease diplomatic tensions between the east African neighbors

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey on Monday mediated talks between Somalia and Ethiopia to ease diplomatic tensions between the east African neighbors, the Turkish Overseas Ministry stated.

Tensions between the 2 African international locations have simmered since Ethiopia signed a memorandum of understanding with the breakaway area of Somaliland in January, which Somalia denounced as infringing upon its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The memorandum was to permit Ethiopia’s entry to the ocean by Somaliland and in return Ethiopia would acknowledge Somaliland as an impartial nation.

The Overseas Minister of Ethiopia, Taye Atske Selassie, and his Somalian counterpart, Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, had been “in a position to individually have a candid, cordial and forward-looking change” regarding their variations, in accordance with an announcement launched by the ministry. Turkey’s international minister, Hakan Fidan, facilitated the talks.
