The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has commenced a five-day coaching workshop on numerical climate prediction (NWP) information assimilation in Abuja, beginning as we speak, Monday, July 22, 2024.
The workshop has attracted contributors from Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Sierra Leone and Togo.
Welcoming contributors on the Nigerian Meteorological Company (NiMet) headquarters, the director-general of NiMet and everlasting consultant of Nigeria with WMO, Professor Charles Anosike emphasised the company’s dedication to advancing meteorological science and enhancing climate prediction capabilities. He said, “Capability constructing and steady skilled growth are important elements of our mission. This workshop aligns completely with our objectives, and we’re delighted to host such a pivotal occasion.”
Anosike expressed gratitude to the WMO for his or her help in capability growth amongst Nationwide Meteorological and Hydrological Companies (NMHS) in West Africa. He recalled, “Round this time final 12 months, Dr. Kyungjeen Park, a numerical climate prediction professional from the WMO, carried out coaching on operationalising the climate analysis and forecasting (WRF) mannequin for NiMet. He inspired the contributors to interact actively within the intensive coaching periods, hands-on workouts, and collaborative discussions over the subsequent few days. “I encourage you all to actively take part, be taught from one another, and share experiences,” Anosike concluded.
This workshop marks a big step in enhancing the meteorological capabilities of West African nations, fostering collaboration and data sharing among the many area’s meteorological consultants.
