Washington — The US has this week invited senior officers from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda to take part in discussions geared toward easing violence in japanese DR Congo, diplomatic sources mentioned.
Bilateral conferences between the USA and every delegation have been scheduled for March 17, with a trilateral session anticipated on March 18 if progress is achieved within the preliminary talks.
The initiative would mark the primary such engagement since the USA Division of the Treasury imposed sanctions on March 2 towards the Rwanda Defence Drive and 4 senior officers.
Washington has overtly accused Rwanda of backing the March 23 Motion — allegations Kigali has repeatedly and strongly denied. The insurgent group has been blamed for escalating hostilities in japanese DR Congo, worsening an already risky safety scenario.
The talks come as dozens of African leaders and officers collect within the US capital for a summit centered on power and continental cooperation, including urgency to diplomatic efforts to stabilise the mineral-rich however conflict-plagued area.
M23 fighters launched a renewed offensive in January 2025 and have since seized giant swathes of territory in japanese DR Congo, elevating fears of a broader regional confrontation.
